The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is an international, independent, and non-profit organization that supports businesses, public institutions, and other organizations in sharing their impact on the world in a clear and understandable way. Comprehensive and accurate reporting in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) areas is critical for both sustainable growth and transparency. However, assessing sustainability reports can become challenging without a standardized methodology.
Who is GRI Reporting Suitable For?
GRI standards are the most widely used sustainability reporting standards by over 10,000 institutions in more than 100 countries worldwide. They are suitable for large companies, public institutions, non-governmental organizations, as well as small and medium-sized enterprises. They are particularly ideal for organizations advancing towards net-zero emission targets to track and report their performance.
Reporting based on GRI offers an accessible sustainability reporting tool for organizations of all sizes and stages of development.
For multinational companies, GRI standards are of significant importance. Although different regions have different sustainability requirements, GRI’s consistent, measurable, and comparable structure provides a single standard reporting language.
What are GRI Standards?
GRI standards consist of three main sections: universal standards, sector standards, and topic-specific standards. While all organizations use the universal standards, they choose the relevant sector and topic standards based on their industry and priority issues. Sector standards are still under development, and new publications are being released.
The universal standards are divided into three main topics:
GRI 1: Fundamental principles
GRI 2: General disclosures
GRI 3: Determination of significant topics
The identification of significant topics encompasses a systematic process that includes understanding the context of the organization, identifying actual and potential impacts, prioritizing these impacts, and ultimately selecting the critical issues to be reported.
Topic-specific standards are divided into three groups:
GRI 200 series: Economic topics
GRI 300 series: Environmental topics
GRI 400 series: Social topics
Each standard includes a management approach and topic-specific disclosures. The management approach describes how an organization manages a specific significant topic, its impacts, and stakeholder expectations. For example, GRI 403 standard covers social issues related to occupational health and safety and includes detailed disclosures.
Benefits of GRI Reporting
Organizations that report using GRI standards better measure, disclose, and manage their impacts while also identifying strategic opportunities more easily. Consistent and transparent reporting strengthens trust relationships with society, the industry, and employees, which enhances market value in the long run. Investors increasingly demand such reports to better assess sustainability risks.
Sustainability reports prepared with GRI provide a current and future-oriented perspective. The standards are regularly updated, allowing reports to be easily compared with past reports and other reports in the industry.
Accurate and internationally accepted ESG reporting is necessary for organizations to provide transparency to their stakeholders and investors and to comply with carbon reduction targets. In 2023, 98.6% of S&P 500 companies published sustainability reports, and all publicly traded companies worldwide are increasingly realizing the economic importance of ESG reporting.
