The European Union has taken an important step with the adoption of the Nature Restoration Law, a pioneering legal regulation.
This groundbreaking law aims to restore 20% of the EU's terrestrial and marine ecosystems by 2030 and to revive all degraded habitats by 2050. It also forms a critical component of the EU Biodiversity Strategy, which sets binding targets for restoring ecosystems with the potential to sequester carbon and mitigate the effects of natural disasters.
The passage of the law after lengthy negotiations highlights the EU's commitment to preventing the current situation, where 80% of Europe's natural habitats are degraded, from reaching an irreversible point. This legal regulation appears not as a measure against any individual or institution, but as a significant advancement towards the well-being and development of nature, biodiversity, and ultimately humanity.
Restoration of nature and ecosystems is not only an environmental necessity but also an economic imperative. Research highlights that restoring nature can strengthen food security, assist fishing, hold job creation potential, and provide financial savings. This situation also demonstrates the symbiotic relationship between the health of the planet and the well-being of our economies.
